Portable Prayers

One of the most delightful discoveries of my life has been what I call “portable prayers.” Of course, prayer is always portable since we carry our prayer closet with us wherever we go, but it is not always easy to intercede in a public, people-filled spot.

I have found that with a pen and paper I can construct a dandy prayer closet right where I am. Airport or doctor’s office, boisterous situations or quiet ones, I can pray with whatever intensity is necessary simply by pulling out my notebook and writing to God.

An excellent example of how powerful this can be happened during a prayer “campaign” for my friend Dorothy. She was in the throes of producing her doctoral dissertation.

The unusual swirl of spiritual warfare surrounding her during these long months of meetings and revisions led us, her prayer support team, to commission someone to accompany her to the university to intercede “on the spot.”

I had the most flexible schedule; so, pen and paper in hand, I marched in just like all the other students...only my textbook was my Bible and my notebook was a prayer closet. I set up shop wherever I could find a place to sit. I prayed in empty classrooms, in the library, in the lecture hall, even in the snack room and hallway.

What wonderful times of prayer! For an hour, two hours, or more, I parried with the enemy, distracting his attention from my friend. The Lord Jesus arose in exaltation over His foes; the anointing of the Holy Spirit was poured out on my friend...all on lined tablet pages covered with words.

How much joy has come from that experience! Dorothy finished her dissertation and she and I entered into a deep and loving relationship: a gift from the Father. She has the written record in her possession of the prayers that were offered for her. And He has returned to me my bread cast upon the waters.

During a brief missionary journey I made, Dorothy and the rest of our prayer support team prayed daily for me. Dorothy was there at the airport when I returned home, exhausted, in the middle of the night. She had in her hand the evidence of prayer -- portable prayers, a treasure from the Father's heart that she could pass on to me to read and reread. “I can do it too,” she grinned. Indeed she can...and so can you!

How to get to heaven

Do you know what it means to be a Christian?

The Bible says:

1. God created you to have a relationship with Him. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him. (Genesis 1:27)

2. But because of sin, you have infinitely offended God. For all have sinned and fall short of God’s glorious standard. (Romans 3:23)

3. This offense of sin carries with it a present separation and, if not dealt with, the ultimate separation of death. But your iniquities have separated you from your God. (Isaiah 59:2) For the wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23)

4. But God, in His great love for you, took the initiative to restore your relationship with him. But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

5. Jesus, God’s Son, removed the offense of your sin and made reconciliation possible. For He (God) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

6. OUR PART is to accept God’s gracious gift of forgiveness by embracing His Son Jesus Christ, by faith. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12)

One way to express your faith and your trust in Jesus is with a prayer like this:

Dear God, I want to be in a right relationship with You. I understand that I have offended You by my sin. God, please forgive me. Forgive me through Your Son, Jesus. I accept His sacrifice for me. I trust Him right now as my personal Savior from sin. God, thank you for taking the initiative to save me. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
