All the Prayers of the Bible - Review

As an intercessor I’m always searching for aids to my prayers. The Bible can be very daunting sometimes for me. As I’m praying, I’m always trying my best to hear God’s heart on the issues for which I’m interceding. Over the years I’ve utilized several aids but never came across a more comprehensive tool than "All the Prayers of the Bible."

The author, Dr. Herbert Lockyer, has done a wonderful job pulling out over 600 beautiful prayers from every book of the Bible in both the Old and New Testaments.

The book is written in such a fashion as to allow the reader to reclaim their lost vocabulary in a short amount of time.

Additionally, Dr. Lockyer gives commentary on each of the books of the Bible that provides useful background information to help the reader hone in on a particular need. Since I discovered this book, I no longer sit wondering how or what to pray for the prayer needs that come to me almost daily. I now have this resource that allows me to personalize and tailor my intercessions to each situation at hand.

This book contains hundreds of seed thoughts not only for prayer intercession but for sermons, inspiration for Sunday school, and Bible study ideas as well. Dr. Lockyer not only summarizes all the prayers but he also analyzes what each book of the Bible tells us about prayer and its role in human life and history.

A small sample of the kinds of prayer covered in this book include: prayer in peril, prayer and spiritual progress, prayer without words, prayer for fear, prayer of gratitude, prayer for understanding of affliction, prayer as dialogue, prayer of a grieved heart, prayer of distress, and prayer for divine action.

Following the Bible, this will be the very next book I place my hands on as I pray for those in need. "Thank you Lord for placing it on Dr. Lockyer’s heart so long ago to write this important volume."

A bit about the author: Dr. Herbert Lockyer was born in London in 1886 and held pastorates in Scotland and England for 25 years before coming to the United States in 1935. In 1937 he received the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Northwestern Evangelical Seminary. In 1955 he returned to England where he lived for many years. He then returned to the United States again where he continued to devote time to the writing ministry until his death in November 1984.

How to get to heaven

Do you know what it means to be a Christian?

The Bible says:

1. God created you to have a relationship with Him. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him. (Genesis 1:27)

2. But because of sin, you have infinitely offended God. For all have sinned and fall short of God’s glorious standard. (Romans 3:23)

3. This offense of sin carries with it a present separation and, if not dealt with, the ultimate separation of death. But your iniquities have separated you from your God. (Isaiah 59:2) For the wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23)

4. But God, in His great love for you, took the initiative to restore your relationship with him. But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

5. Jesus, God’s Son, removed the offense of your sin and made reconciliation possible. For He (God) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

6. OUR PART is to accept God’s gracious gift of forgiveness by embracing His Son Jesus Christ, by faith. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12)

One way to express your faith and your trust in Jesus is with a prayer like this:

Dear God, I want to be in a right relationship with You. I understand that I have offended You by my sin. God, please forgive me. Forgive me through Your Son, Jesus. I accept His sacrifice for me. I trust Him right now as my personal Savior from sin. God, thank you for taking the initiative to save me. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
