Praying the Names of God

God is a gracious, loving Father who has our best interest at heart. Even during times of trials and frustrations we can be reminded that God still has a good plan for our lives. Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28 are favorite scriptures that we draw upon when life seems overwhelming and our problems are mounting.  Yet in the midst of looking for biblical platitudes to assure ourselves that we are going make it through, do we ever stop focusing on our situation long enough to look at the person of God?

A quick search through numerous books written about the meaning of the names of God assures us of God’s character, which is far more trustworthy and abiding than our own. In addition to bombarding heaven with our requests, we can remind ourselves of who God is and all He has done in the past. One simple way to accomplish both is through using God’s names in our prayers.

During the last few years of world-wide economic hardship, we have all known individuals who were experiencing extreme financial trials. The following prayer serves as an example of how to pray some of the names of God over people who are searching for employment. Feel free to pray this prayer over yourself or substitute a loved one’s name in place of the words “me” and “my”:

Thank You LORD that You are El Shaddai (my Supplier). You have supplied jobs in the past and You will continue to supply jobs in the future. In the interim You will supply all my needs. You are also the supplier of all contentment and well-being, even in the midst of the storm.

Praise You LORD that You are Elohim (my Creator).  You created me.  You know what is best for me because You know me better than I know myself.  Thank You Father that it will not diminish Your unending supply one iota when You create the perfect job and ample provision for me.

LORD, You are Jehovah Jireh (my Provider). Nehemiah 2:20 tells me that “The God of Heaven Himself will prosper us.” Lord, I know that it is You, not me, who will bring prosperity to the work of my hands. You are Jehovah Shalom (my Peace). You are also Jehovah Shammah (my Abiding Presence). Your presence within me will allow me to go through every trial that is before me.

Father, I know that You are Jehovah Mikkadesh (my Sanctifier) and You will sanctify me. Please prepare me for the future job You have waiting for me. Jehovah Rapha (my Healer), please continue to heal me from the hurt of the job loss. I thank You that even now you are guiding me and You will guide me continually because You always have been and always will be Jehovah Rohi (my Shepherd). To You be all praise, honor, and glory. Amen.

How to get to heaven

Do you know what it means to be a Christian?

The Bible says:

1. God created you to have a relationship with Him. So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him. (Genesis 1:27)

2. But because of sin, you have infinitely offended God. For all have sinned and fall short of God’s glorious standard. (Romans 3:23)

3. This offense of sin carries with it a present separation and, if not dealt with, the ultimate separation of death. But your iniquities have separated you from your God. (Isaiah 59:2) For the wages of sin is death. (Romans 6:23)

4. But God, in His great love for you, took the initiative to restore your relationship with him. But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

5. Jesus, God’s Son, removed the offense of your sin and made reconciliation possible. For He (God) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

6. OUR PART is to accept God’s gracious gift of forgiveness by embracing His Son Jesus Christ, by faith. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12)

One way to express your faith and your trust in Jesus is with a prayer like this:

Dear God, I want to be in a right relationship with You. I understand that I have offended You by my sin. God, please forgive me. Forgive me through Your Son, Jesus. I accept His sacrifice for me. I trust Him right now as my personal Savior from sin. God, thank you for taking the initiative to save me. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
